How to Romanticize Your Life While You're Single

Being single doesn’t have to suck.

I know: couples are everywhere. But other people having what you think you want doesn’t have to be a reflection of you lacking. Being single can still be a celebration.

After all, if you are single, it’s most likely because you were willing to make space for the kind of love you know you are worthy of rather than staying in relationships that do not represent what you desire.

Why not create from that space?

You are allowed to curate experiences you enjoy, even if you desire someone else to share your life with. I’d rather you spend time alone than spend it with someone or people who don’t add any real value to your life.

You can spend your time trying to ignore romance while subconsciously obsessing over avoiding anything that feels remotely romantic (at that point, you aren’t ignoring it) or you can lean into it and curate romantic experiences for yourself.

I want to challenge you to take charge. After all, being in charge of your life doesn’t just include discipline. It also looks like creating magical moments in the midst of mundane seasons.

Curate an Experience at Home

Elevate Your Space: There’s nothing more fulfilling than a space that matches the experience you are creating. Pour love into your home. Make it cliché. Declutter and put your laundry away. Make room for fun decorations. Put hearts and roses everywhere. Buy extra candles. Add streamers. Blow up balloons. Turn on the ambient lights. Let your favorite colors fill your space. Be expressive and curate a space that represents what love means to you.

Pamper Yourself: Nothing screams love and romance like getting pampered. Book yourself a half day of massages and saunas. Stay home and spend an hour or two taking a bubble bath. Open the book you’ve been wanting to read. Do your nails and moisturize your cuticles. Wash your hair and take the time to detangle it. Indulge in a face mask. Sit in a robe that feels like a cloud while listening to classical music. Make the experience feel physically good, not just emotionally.

Get in the Kitchen: Just because you may not be going out to eat with someone doesn’t mean you shouldn’t eat something delicious. Get on Pinterest, search for a recipe or perhaps two, and take the time to cook for yourself.

Try a New Hobby: You know that thing you’ve been wanting to learn? This would be the perfect time to start. Nothing screams self-love more than tapping into your desires and taking action on them. Hobbies fill your time with meaning. Would you rather learn something new or sit around feeling sad? Most of us would choose the former.

Invest in Your Wants

Splurge on Treats: Chocolates. Candies. Pastries. Why not let yourself indulge? Invest in quality treats that will bring a little extra dopamine to your day. I refuse to let you buy cheap candy just to go through the motions of saying you did something nice for yourself.

Walk around a bakery and find your next favorite treat. Walk through the aisles and pick the luxury chocolate rather than the cheap kind that leaves you with a headache. Splurge on the candy you always save for a special occasion. Buy the things you’d want someone else to buy for you.

And when it’s time to eat? Don’t just stuff your face with chocolate while scrolling through social media and wondering why you can’t have what everyone else has. No, this is supposed to be a sensory experience.

Buy Yourself That Thing: It is nice to receive gifts from others. It feels even nicer when we take care of ourselves when we can. Get the necklace. Purchase the perfume you sampled and can’t stop thinking about. Buy the new laptop. You don’t have to go crazy, but one little token of affection for yourself adds dimension to the experience.

Go on a Solo Adventure

Go to the place you’ve been wanting to visit, whether that’s a new restaurant, a nearby city, a hiking trail, a museum, or a lake. Take yourself out. Perhaps you only have time to do something small. Either way, get out of the house! Nothing sets a bad precedent faster than not moving around.

Being single doesn’t have to feel like a death sentence or worse, boring. You can desire love without letting it consume you or influence the experiences you allow yourself to have.

You’re allowed to enjoy your own company. You’re allowed to have fun. You’re allowed to stumble while learning how to do things alone.

Enjoying your own company doesn't mean you can't want love; it just means you're enjoying the journey on the way!

Get active in how you curate your day-to-day experiences. Don’t spend your time wishing for things you don’t have. Sit in reflection of what you do have and utilize those tools to live boldly.

Love will come, but there’s something to be said about allowing the love within you to come out during your waiting season. When you set new standards with yourself, you invite in individuals who are a match for them.
